Profile - Dr Cem Selcuk CEng, CEnv
Dr. Cem Selcuk (CEng, CEnv) is a founder and consultant specialised in metallurgical engineering and materials design with specific interests in innovation and novel product / process development and technology engineering for industrial applications and end use
He was the Head of Business Development for the TWI Innovation Network (TWIIN), which he expanded with new Innovation Centres - ICs (academic partnerships) and technology accelerator programmes (industrial partnerships) mainly with SMEs.
He was the Head of the first IC at TWI; Brunel Innovation Centre (BIC)
He was the Programme Director of the first European Innovation Centre (EIC) at TWI with Sabanci University, Istanbul.
He setup several Innovation Centres (University partnerships of TWI, in the UK & Europe) and developed TWI Innovation Network (TWIIN) with hundreds of industrial SMEs as part of Technology Acceleration Programmes (TAPs – previously Innovation Accelerators - AIPs.). He continued to grow TWIIN in an international manner. Cem developed industrial membership of TWI and brought in several industrial members. Dr. Cem Selcuk has also supported The Welding Institute as the first Global Ambassador.
He had his BSc (Hons) from M.E.T.U in Ankara, Turkey from the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering department, then PhD on Materials Engineering and Design from the University of Nottingham. His PhD was on Powder Metallurgy; more specifically Reactive Sintering of Tungsten. Following his time as a Research Associate, he moved into Aluminium industry as a project manager in innovative product and technology development more specifically on Aluminium Metal Matrix Composites, for a US & UK metals business.
He has published in over 75 peer-reviewed journals with over 550 citations for his work, presented at numerous international conferences, authored book chapters, industrial project reports, and contributed as a referee. He sits on Editorial Board of several prominent journals.
He specialised in materials design in the field of powder metallurgy and metal matrix composites. His technical interests include development of alternative materials processing techniques and technology transfer, with an emphasis on the relationship between processing, structure and properties of materials for improved performance and quality control. The latter approach included innovation of advanced non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods and their automation for a wide range of applications in technology engineering for implementation in industry.
Dr. Selcuk has been an active professional member of EPMA, APMI, IOM3 (FIMMM) and The Welding Institute (FWeldI) for almost over two decades, where he sat on the Younger Members Committee in the early years supporting professional development. He was the secretary for the Materials Technical Group of the Welding and Joining Society for a number of years. He has contributed to the TWI Education Committee as fellow for the Professional Board. Cem has been chairman for the Particulate Engineering Committee (PEC) and board member of the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD) of the IOM3 and also sits as vice-chair on the Defence, Safety and Security Committee (DSSC), Leadership Group of the IOM3. Cem sits on the Energy Materials Group (EMG) Board of the IOM3. He is also an active member of the overarching IOM3 Technology Communities Board (TCB) that links up the technical communities of the IOM3. Dr. Selcuk is a freeman of the City of London and is also a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Founders.
